CHAPTER 11

Thursday, December 19, 2019

At the RCMP office at Wesbrook Mall, I come face-to-face with a nasty surprise. After waiting for twenty minutes in an uncomfortable plastic chair at the entrance, on the wrong side of the barred front door, I am ushered in by a bored-looking administrator who sniffs at me disapprovingly. She peruses my jeans and hoodie, my lack of uniform, and makes a judgment about my place in the pecking order. I’m not important enough to waste a smile on.

Inside the station, I wait for another five minutes, resisting the urge to pace. And then, he appears.

A Greek god of a man with mystic hazel eyes, the physique of a Michelangelo statue, rugged golden skin, a firm stride. Tall and bearded, a black turban with clean lines perfectly wrapped around his head. Capping off the glower that darkens his brow. A cowboy getting ready for a duel.

Who is he? I wonder as I make a conscious effort to pick my jaw off the floor. This can’t possibly be Detective Singh. No way.

And then he’s standing right in front of me, frowning at me. Arms folded across his expansive chest. No hand outstretched for a customary handshake.

“You must be Fati,” he says in a clipped tone. “I’m Detective Talvir Singh.”

I stare. Open my mouth and no words come out. I can feel my face getting warm, and then hot enough to fry an egg on.

I nod and then croak out a “Hi”.

He turns on his heel, motions for me to follow him with a flick of his hand. I walk behind him on rubbery legs. My eyes glued to the shifting muscles in his back as he glides, a fashion model walking down the runway.

What kind of cop is this? Is this the secret of his near perfect solve rate? Otherworldly good looks that turn criminals’ brains to putty? What has Sheriff Keller gotten me into?

“You want to bang the detective on your case?” Zed’s voice drips with disbelief.

“No, I don’t!” I say, immediately realizing I’m lying. I sink into my living room couch.

“Are you going to wait until the case is over to make your move?”

“I’m not going to make a move. He was just - surprisingly attractive, that’s all.”

“You spend far too much time alone,” Zed says. “Do you want to end up like Sharon Reese? So alone there’s no one to claim your property when you die?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I snap. “I’m not alone. I have enough family to fight over my assets, thank you.”

“When was the last time you got some sweet, sweet loving?”

“I don’t remember,” I say honestly. “There was that hunky neighbour on a case I worked some time ago...”

“The murder by golf cart case? That was almost nine months ago.”

Zed is right. Oh my God…

“Why didn’t you tell me you slept with that neighbour?” Zed is saying. “He was hot. Did you at least wait until the case was over?”

“Of course,” I say. “I’m a professional. I would never do anything to jeopardize my case.
